It took me a while to notice that the two people who died recently were younger than me. I didn't know either of them, and the fact that each had special circumstances (one, death by misadventure in a faraway land, the other, a sorry tale of self neglect...) may have led me to overlook this fact. But we turn away from this kind of truth until it becomes glaringly obvious: when all our kindred and peers are gone, and we find ourselves alone with strange people, leading strange lives, in a strange land.
